Ultimate Guide to Cracking JEE: Tips for Top Scores

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a nationwide engineering entrance examination conducted yearly by the Central Board of Secondary Education for admission into various engineering institutions across India. The total number of candidates appearing for this exam increases yearly to get admission into the best IIT institutes in India.

According to the source, the JEE examination was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in written and CBT (computer-based assessment or online assessment) modes until 2018. From then on, it was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in online assessment or CBT (computer-based assessment) mode only.

JEE - Joint Entrance Examination comprises two different examinations:

  • The JEE-Main

  • The JEE-Advanced.

In 2013, the IIT-JEE was renamed JEE-Advanced, and the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination) was renamed JEE-Main. The JEE entrance exam is usually conducted twice yearly: Session 1 and Session 2, commonly known as the January and April sessions

This entrance exam also serves as a preliminary selection and eligibility test for qualifying. Both JEE Main and Advanced are national-level entrance exams that provide access to India's best engineering schools for aspirants. To qualify for JEE Advanced, candidates must pass the JEE Main exam.

The JEE entrance exam question paper pattern is entirely objective and consists of two papers. Paper 1-Mains for B.E/B.Tech engineering aspirants and paper 2- Advanced for Bachelor of Architecture and planning applicants.

JEE Paper 1—Mains are the exams conducted for the B.E/B—tech engineering courses. The question paper mainly includes MCQs and subjective questions based on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam mode will be CBT, and the total exam duration will be 3 hours. The total marks will be 300.

JEE Paper 2—Advanced are the exams conducted for the Bachelor of Architecture course. The question paper mainly includes MCQs and Numerical-type questions based on physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The exam mode will be CBT, with the total exam duration being 3 hours. The total marks with the marking scheme will vary every year. In these exams, the drawing skills of the candidates are evaluated. and they have to study effectively to score high in JEE 2025.

Scoring high in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) requires strategic planning, consistent effort, and innovative techniques. Here are some valuable tips to help you excel in JEE- 2025:

Understand the JEE Pattern and Syllabus

  • The first step towards preparing for the JEE exam is learning the exam pattern.

  • JEE consists of two papers, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Each paper has three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

  • JEE Main and JEE Advanced papers have multiple-choice (MCQs) and numerical-based questions.

  • Thus, thoroughly understand the syllabus. Go through the syllabus for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

  • Give priority to topics with a higher weighting, but do not ignore others.

Create an effective Study Plan.

  • Set realistic goals by breaking your preparation into weekly and monthly plans, ensuring you cover the entire syllabus while leaving enough time for revision.

  • Allocate fixed hours for each subject. Ensure a balanced study routine for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

  • Prioritise topics based on their marking scheme. Some subjects or chapters have higher significance on the exam. Thus, focus on learning these key topics first.

Focus on Conceptual Clarity

  • Refer more to class 12 NCERT textbooks and solutions and other study materials.

  • Avoid memorising formulas or theories without understanding their derivation and application.

  • Always try to learn and understand the fundamentals and core concepts to help solve complicated problems.

Solve JEE Model Papers and Previous Years' Question Papers

  • Practise solving as many problems as possible using the JEE Model Papers and Previous Years' Question Papers. This will help improve problem-solving speed and accuracy.

  • Solving previous years’ question papers will familiarise you with the question paper pattern, format, types of questions, and essential topics.

Assess your Readiness by taking more Mock Tests:

  • Take regular mock tests under exam conditions. This will help you build stamina and get used to the exam pressure.

  • Try to have more mock tests and solve more JEE question papers from previous years to analyse your preparation and improve your time management skills.

Work on Speed and Accuracy

  • Time Management is crucial during the exam—practise solving problems under time constraints to improve speed and accuracy.

  • Never rush and make mistakes. Focus on solving problems correctly, not just quickly.

  • It is always better to read and understand the question thoroughly, spend more time on each question and choose the correct option, as some questions might have negative markings- marks deducted for each incorrect answer.

Strengthen Your Weak Areas

  • Identify your weak areas and most challenging topics by regularly assessing your performance, taking more mock tests, practising more questions, and dedicating more time to these topics.

Reach out to your peers, lectures, and faculties and seek help.

  • If you struggle with a topic, never hesitate to seek guidance from teachers, peers, or online resources.

  • Always have a group discussion on complex topics, as this develops a deeper understanding of the topic and increases long-term retention.

Stay Consistent and Avoid Procrastination

  • Consistency is key to JEE preparation. Ensure that you study every day, even for a short period.

  • Avoid last-minute cramming and never postpone the topics for last-minute preparations. Start preparing early and maintain a steady pace.

Collect all the Study Material

  • Before starting your preparations, collect all the textbooks, notes, and reference study material. Some of the standard reference books for the JEE exam include :

  • Physics: H.C. Verma (Concepts of Physics), D.C. Pandey, I.E. Irodov

  • Chemistry: O.P. Tandon, J.D. Lee (Inorganic), Morrison and Boyd (Organic)

  • Mathematics: R.D. Sharma, S.L. Loney (Trigonometry), Problems in Calculus of One Variable by I.A. Maron

  • Also, use online resources by referring to some online platforms for conceptual clarity and additional practise.

Revise, Revise and Revise

  • Consistent revision is more than just a routine task. It is a tool that strengthens learning. Thus, revise a part of your daily routine and revise key concepts, formulas, and shortcuts regularly.

  • Maintain a formula sheet for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. This will help during the revision phase and ensure you don’t forget essential formulas.

Stay Physically and Mentally Healthy

  • Along with the preparations, physical activities like exercise, walking, or yoga are required in your daily routine. A healthy body boosts brain function and reduces stress.

  • Take regular breaks and avoid studying for long hours. Follow the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes of study and a 5-minute break).

  • Ensure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue and hinder your focus and productivity.

  • Stress can affect your performance, so practise relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing.

Stay Motivated and Confident

  • Last but not least, stay optimistic throughout your preparation. If you encounter difficulties, consider them as challenges to overcome.

  • Stay away from distractions or negativity. Confidence in your abilities is crucial for success. Trust the effort you have put in and give your best in the exam.

  • Remember that JEE preparation is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep a balanced approach, stay persistent, and maintain a positive attitude. The key to success lies in consistent hard work, innovative study techniques, and time management.

These were a few essential points to crack the JEE exams. Before preparing for the exams, all aspirants should thoroughly review the syllabus, exam pattern, important topics, mark distributions, and JEE advanced cut-off. In addition, candidates must have a clear idea of relevant topics and other reference study materials.

All the best!
