Introduction

Humanities is a broad field with subjects that delve into various aspects of human society, culture, behaviour and experiences. The core humanities subjects are Literature, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, History and Cultural Studies. These subjects give a better understanding of human interactions and man-made social and physical structures. This can lead to lucrative career opportunities dealing with people and society. Studying the humanities can help us gain insights into our own lives, societies, and the world around us, fostering skills in communication, critical thinking, and empathy.

Brief Overview of Humanities Subjects

Economics (with/without Maths)

In Economics, we study systems and processes that explain how goods and services are produced and traded at the microeconomic level, and how a nation’s economy is managed at a macroeconomic level. After high school, students can choose to graduate in Economics and specialise in a single area of the subject to lead to lucrative careers in research, public sector roles, finance and banking jobs and much more.

History

In History, students will learn about world history, the pre-historic world, the Industrial Revolution, early societies and civilisations, important eras and the Indian freedom struggle. After high school, students can choose to study history as a Major subject and specialise in any one topic. They can work towards careers in archaeology, palaeontology, teaching, research, conservation management, heritage management, public administration and much more.

Psychology

In humanities, psychology is the study of the human mind, mental processes, and behaviour which lead to various experiences and a better understanding of socio-cultural and historical reactions. With this subject, students can build towards specialisation in sports psychology, child psychology, clinical psychology, hypnotherapy and social psychology among others.

Geography

Geography studies the Earth’s surface and its relationship with human beings. In this subject, students will study physical geography, which encompasses landforms, flora and fauna—their evolution, location, distribution and development. They will also study human geography, which explores population, economy, transport and Cartography. Studying this subject can lead to careers in aviation and shipping, environment and sustainability, urban planning, climate change and more.

Political Science

Political science is the study of political structures, processes and different types of governments, public sector organisations and political ideologies. You will learn about foreign policies, decision-making processes, and various schools of political ideology. Generally, students with aspirations of a career in public administration, law enforcement or defence study political science.

Sociology

Sociology studies human behaviour, interactions and relations in society. It explores concepts of social status, movements, change and societal disorder through deviant occurrences of crime and revolutions. Sociology students go on to major in the subject and explore careers in human resources, the public sector, law enforcement, public relations and media among others.

Philosophy

Philosophy provides an understanding of fundamental concepts of reality, existence, values, reason, knowledge, and language. It critically examines philosophical ideologies and concepts by applying systemic reasoning and argumentation. Students will study topics such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, logic, and more.

Literature

Literature explores literary works through prose and poetry in a language. Students will study the works of noted authors and poets of different eras, study the society as depicted in the literary work and explore the impact of various literary movements. Students will critically examine the works of noted contemporary and old authors. Literature can be pursued in different languages such as English, Kannada, Hindi, or other regional languages to study the literary works published in that language. It can lead to careers in writing, journalism, or media studies.

How to choose humanities courses?

The career prospects after graduating from humanities are just as broad as the subjects offered in it. In PUC, students will study any four subjects of their choice with English as a first language and choose between Hindi, Kannada and Sanskrit as a second language. The popular subject combinations that are available are:

  • HEPyS - History, Economics, Psychology, Sociology
  • EPPyS - Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology
  • HEPyP - History, Economics, Psychology, Political Science

One matches their career alternatives with their aptitude and interest and then chooses a subject combination which aligns best.

Conclusion

For students who are good with people, curious about society and social set-up, or want to work in fields where knowledge of human behaviour and expectation is required, humanities is a great field. Whether you choose to be an entrepreneur, have aspirations to become a manager, or work in public sector organisations, then humanities subjects will help you prepare for your role better.
