Clearing the 10th grade is the first hurdle that will take you towards dedicating your time to studying the subject where your interest and aptitude lie. If you are interested in learning about society, its people and how they behave individually and collectively, and understand the motivation behind decision-making, then Humanities has the subject that delves into these matters. No matter what career path you choose, understanding human nature, society and its systems will help you become astute in interactions.

Humanities in PUC

The Pre-University Course (PUC) is the 11th and 12th grade equivalent in Karnataka State Higher Secondary Board. The course structure requires students to choose 4 elective subjects, which most high schools and junior colleges of the state offer as combinations. English is a compulsory first language and students can choose a second language from Hindi, Kannada, and Sanskrit. The elective subject combination that the students will choose in 11th grade will also be studied in the 12th grade. The humanities subjects offered by PUC are:

A brief overview of humanities subjects for class 11

History

Class 11 History will cover significant historical events, movements, and personalities from different periods. Students will explore themes such as colonialism, revolutions, and social movements in national and global history.

Economics

Economics in class 11 introduces students to the foundational concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics. They will study important aspects of the production and distribution process of goods and services. The subject covers important macroeconomic concepts of GDP, GNP, population index and per capita income among others.

Sociology

Class 11 Sociology explores the structure of societies, social relationships, and cultural norms. Students examine topics like social stratification, family structures, and the impact of globalisation. They will understand study ideas and concepts that will strengthen their understanding of community and identity.

Psychology

Political Science

Political Science in class 11 introduces students to the structures, processes, and theories that govern societies. In Class 11, students study the Indian Constitution, fundamental rights, and the functioning of various political institutions. They will explore different forms of government and the works of different political scientists.

Literature

In Class 11, students study noted literary texts from different eras, starting from the erstwhile classics to contemporary works from India and abroad. They will learn about distinct literary styles and view the world from that period.

Choosing the apt Subject combination

Most professional college courses after 12th grade for humanities students do not require students to have a background in any single subject. However, if one is planning to major in a single subject and pursue a PhD, then they must study it from 11th grade itself. Also, there is no option to change one’s course combination in 12th grade, so it is pertinent that one chooses wisely in the 11th grade.
