By JAIN College
Goa’s Liberation Day

Goa celebrates the Liberation Day of Goa every year on 19th December, which marks the very day it was liberated in 1961 from the ruling Portuguese in a near span of more than 450 years. On this day, ending the chain of colonial rule started in itself as the integral state of free India. It is now the time to pay tribute to the resilience of the Goans, remember their sacrifices for freedom, and celebrate a rich cultural heritage in the state.

A Brief History of Goan Liberation

Goa had been a Portuguese colony since 1510 and became one of the longest-held colonies in the country. While elsewhere in the country gained independence from Britain in 1947, Goa was still Portuguese. Even after India's independence, Portugal did not become willing to downgrade its status with Goa by proclaiming it an overseas province.

But the Goan people wanted freedom. Decades of revolts and movements against Portuguese rule picked up momentum. Leaders such as T.B. Cunha, Lohia, and many more arose and built up the people's sentiments against the colonial power.

The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Vijay, a military action to free Goa, Daman, and Diu, on 18 December 1961. After a 36-hour operation, the Portuguese surrendered, and on December 19, Goa was officially declared free. Today, this day is celebrated as Goa's Liberation Day, symbolising triumph over oppression.
