Some skills are picked as needed, and many have to be cultivated from the beginning until they become habits. Punctuality is a habit that will continue to pay over a person’s lifetime. Most lost things can be found or replaced, but time waits for none. Hence, respecting it and using it optimally is essential. The students who use their time well are the ones who better adjust to the rigours of academics and can shuffle multiple opportunities. Let us better understand the importance of punctuality in a student’s life.

Significance of punctuality in a student’s life

The foundation of time management and punctuality is laid in student life when one is expected to attend school every day at the same time. Managing one’s schedule from waking at the correct time, getting ready for school and arriving on time teaches the basic values of punctuality. One learns to respect their and their peers’ time through regular attendance at school. Reaching late to school will attract the reprimand from teachers. It may even affect a teacher’s consideration of a student for various opportunities. Some areas where punctuality is important in a student’s life are -

Academic performance

When a student manages time efficiently, they arrive to class on time and are not weighed down by any stress or anxiety surrounding incomplete work. Thus, they can better understand the curriculum and achieve academic success.

Developing good habits

It takes discipline and consistency to ensure punctuality. One must organise their schedule and learn to manage their time, without being too distracted to be on time and keep their appointments. Thus, through being punctual students cultivate many other important habits and skills such as organisational skills, time management, prioritisation etc.

Respect for others

Respecting someone’s time is the most basic form of respect one can show to others and themselves. Lost time can never be got back, and when someone gives us an appointment or we have committed to an activity with a group, the basic courtesy we can show is to be punctual. Being punctual shows consideration and respect for teachers, classmates, and the school community.

Building confidence

When one arrives on time, they have the self-assurance that they have kept the appointment at the stated time. This helps them relax and focus on the task at hand. If you reach the exam hall a few minutes before the allotted time, you can focus entirely. On what you have learned, be prepared for any unforeseen issues and give your best performance without fretting over starting the paper on time.

A transferable skill

A transferable skill is something that can be carried across all personal and professional roles. It will help them be better managers with heightened organisational capabilities and professional demeanour.

How to build the super skill called punctuality?

Alter your outlook

Being on time means - less stress, less embarrassment, being viewed as someone diligent, responsible and reliable, avoiding confusion and ensuring not miss opportunities from being unsure about the time. So, rather than viewing time management as a chore or an obligation, view it as a task that has to be done just like eating three meals, dressing up or going to bed.

Better planning

Plan and factor in any unforeseeable circumstances. For instance, in monsoon season, it is advisable to leave home at least ten to fifteen minutes early to avoid traffic, puddles or roadblocks. You can lay out your uniform and pack your bag as soon as you complete your homework. Be early at the dining table for your breakfast and don’t forget to carry your lunch.

Always plan for unexpected delays or interruptions

Whether it is for study time, going to school, attending a sports competition, or any other event, always try to maintain some buffer time. If you reach a few minutes early, then you can focus completely on the event and not worry about unexpected problems. Also, being early or before time creates a strong positive impression in your favour.

Set the clock ahead

Many adopt this practice and endorse it all their lives. If the clock is five to ten minutes early, it tricks one into working around that time. Of course, it is not a foolproof plan, but it helps.

Set reminders

Reminders help finish tasks such as homework, re-vision, solving past papers etc. on time. You can even allocate time for rest, play, or other hobbies and activities so that you are not left cramming everything before leaving for school.

Stick to sleep and wake-up time

Whether it is a working day or a holiday, if you stick to sleeping and waking up at the same time every day, it will help you be regular. Sleeping and waking up early is generally advised, but it should be your choice how you set your schedule for individual activities.

Once you make punctuality a habit, you can universally fit into any environment. It will help you be a better planner and make the best of the opportunities presented to you.
