Exploring the Importance of Preservation of Historical Sites
On 22nd January, amidst the preparatory exams, the II PUC Humanities students gathered in their classroom, to delve into the political and cultural significance of that day: the Ram Mandir consecration. The focus was on “the importance of preservation of historical sites and monuments in enriching cultural significance.”
The deliberation opened with a question- Why do societies insist upon preserving historical sites, monuments and artefacts?
Throughout the discussion, the students explored various aspects of historical monuments, including their impact on shaping the cultural and political identities of individuals and communities. They explored the different facets of the event, the reasons for their preservation, and instances in history where monuments faced insufficient reverence and the consequences seen today.
What stood out was the interconnectedness of disciplines in the Humanities. While one might assume the conversation would revolve solely around History, it expanded to encompass Politics, Sociology, Literature, Psychology, and Anthropology. Students discussed how historical monuments continue to inspire even in the modern world, citing examples such as amphitheatres that maintain the ancient Greek architectural style from Athens. This interdisciplinary approach highlighted the rich tapestry of connections among various fields and reinforced the multifaceted importance of preserving historical sites.
